Literacy in Toronto’s East End

Literacy for East Toronto (LET) began as a community coalition in 1990. It was formed to address the literacy needs of adults living or working in East Toronto. The Metropolitan Separate School Board (now the Toronto Catholic District School Board), the Ralph Thornton Centre, Toronto Public Library, WoodGreen Community Centre and the Riverdale Community Health Centre were involved in the inception of LET. In 1995, LET was incorporated. It developed into a one-to-one literacy tutoring program and operated for many years in partnership with the Toronto Catholic District School Board.

Currently, LET is fully run and operated by volunteers. This includes a volunteer board of directors and volunteer tutors. It remains located on the Mezzanine level in the Ralph Thornton Centre.
